Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, is designed to help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies and are standardized across most states, meaning the benefits for each plan type (e.g., Plan A, Plan G, Plan N) are the same regardless of the provider.
Each plan type offers the same basic benefits, making it easier to compare options. For example, Plan G covers almost all of Medicare's gaps except for the Part B deductible.
Unlike Medicare Advantage, Medigap plans allow you to see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare, without network restrictions
You can see specialists without needing a referral from a primary care physician.
Medigap policies are valid anywhere in the U.S. where Medicare is accepted, making them ideal for those who travel frequently.
Medigap cannot be used with a Medicare Advantage Plan. You must have Original Medicare to purchase a Medigap policy.
Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so if you need this, you would need to purchase a separate Medicare Part D plan.
As long as you pay your premiums, your Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable, meaning it cannot be canceled due to health conditions.
